Ephemeral Resource Adaptations

Crazy about evolution. Mother nature is my religion. Bats, bats, bats. and shrews. Leader of the best group ❤️. Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior
Almost all scientific research is done with lab animals. Surprisingly, there is barely any literature on how captivity may affect the results. And these effects can be profound. In shrews, remind us of depression as the paper published by @cecibaldoni.bsky.social shows doi.org/10.1098/rsos...

looking for a good scientific read? This paper is out today and shows how much energy male bats can save by living in groups. Great for buffering environmental unexpectedness! Pic by Rene J doi.org/10.1242/jeb....

tadaa- second paper of the year out! This time on shrews and how quickly and massively they are affected by captivity. Congrats to the junior student who is the first author on this awesome paper: doi.org/10.1098/rsbl... @animaltracking.bsky.social @unikonstanz.bsky.social @labdavalos.bsky.social
Gene expression comparisons between captive and wild shrew brains reveal captivity effects | Biology Letters
Compared with their free-ranging counterparts, wild animals in captivity experience different conditions with lasting physiological and behavioural effects. Although shifts in gene expression are expe...

how about starting the new year with a @science.org paper? Congrats Edward Hurme and other coauthors, this makes me incredibly happy 🦇💨

loving the X-odus! Everybody join here - it's friendly, tolerant, open-armed and -minded, not owned by a horrible person and the orange desaster is absent

greater spear-nosed bats choose foraging sites based on tradition, even if it means commuting across the sea. Great results from the PhD of Camilla Calderon, out bin Biology Letters today: doi.org/10.1098/rsbl...
Consistent long-distance foraging flights across years and seasons at colony level in a neotropical bat | Biology Letters
All foraging animals face a trade-off: how much time should they invest in exploitation of known resources versus exploration to discover new resources? For group-living central place foragers, this balance is challenging. Due to the nature of their ...

Congratulations Sarah, for submitting you bachelor thesis. She fought valiant battles with giant data sets and algorithms spitting out false positives and prevailed: lesser fishing bats' morning foraging is determined by reproductive state. Also our lab culture very much revolves around cake 😇

#shrew paper alert! 📣🐭
Did you know the shrews shrink their brain🧠 in winter❄️?

Our study shows unique changes in hypothalamus gene expression, related to energy regulation🔋, which helps shrews adapt to seasonal challenges 🍂

Have a look! 👀
