Our work as antifas is to deprive them of platforms, & of power. There’s a quote about racism from an ex-Black Panther that’s just as true in this case about fascists. The fascist’s ideas are his problem. If they obtain the power or confidence to act on them, that’s when they become our problem.

We won’t change their minds, & that’s not the point. The battle of ideas is the work of political education and anarchist agitation.

As I thought about Carlos’ death, I remembered again how Victor concluded his blend of scolding, history lesson, & motivational speech all wrapped into one that spring afternoon in Paris.

I was armed with a healthy dose of sincere conviction in the indispensable importance of what we were doing as an act of public safety and collective self-defense, the occasional blunt force weapon, and the words of Victor on that afternoon at the CNT,

I was incredibly fortunate to always leave these confrontations relatively unscathed, despite being neither particularly large, nor having any kind of relevant combat sport or martial arts training.
