I sat with my back turned to the basement At the top of the stairs And a tingle shot itself into my spine Running its course along my flesh I don’t know what I’m afraid of But I am certain that I am afraid The sun came out briefly yesterday But fell when I decided to look at it The river froze over this morning Trapping some swans in the middle There was no sun to thaw them free I kept looking for its warmth I sat in the basement at night And felt the air you used to breathe And as the world froze to fire I made love to my fear of death

My children sit atop an afghan in my lap. Beansprout, closer to the camera, is curled away from me, putting the full weight of his bowling ball body on my right thigh. Margaret, who is roughly half the size of her brother, is resting her tiny head on my foot. Both are passed out, as if they have just finished a long day at the biscuit making factory.
