Someone talk books and movies with me
Just finished watching a conversation with Percival Everett through our local libraries today. I bet he would be fascinating to just hang out with and listen to. He seemed a little awkward about being fawned over, but he's so disarming and knowledgeable. Big professor dad vibes and I love it.

It's spooky season! What are you reading? I started with The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, and now onto The Bird's Nest by Shirley Jackson. I'm also relistening to The Haunting of Hill House on my commute

Chuck Tingle's Bury Your Gays was wonderful. Very cathartic sci-fi horror. Spicy books have never been my thing so despite loving Chuck and his unrepenting authenticity & humor, I've never read his books. Having a book that feels tailored for me was a real treat. Really looking forward to Lucky Day!

Been craving Nigerian food ever since reading Death of the Author by Nnedi Okorafor, and since there isn't a restaurant close enough to me I made jollof rice, red red and fried plantains for dinner🤤

When people post those "10 books that...No explanations. Just covers" challenges, it feels so empty.

I want to know Why they influenced you, How they changed your life, What spoke to you, What do they say about your soul ..

That's the magic of reading. It should connect us and our shared humanity

The events of Parabel of the Sower are dated for right now. Feels like reading a Bible, or the experiences of a time traveler, especially with how real so much of Butler's story has become.

Finished Service Model by Adrian Tchaikovsky. It was so delightful; a Kafkaesque journey through multiple philosophies, popular allegories and general absurdism. The messages of a collapsing society seem especially relevant right now.
Mild spoiler quote (from early in the book) below:

This is legitimately the worst author introduction I have ever read. Isaac Asimov writing about Anne McCaffrey.

Spoiler: your gross uncle discovers that women are people too

Years ago this book just about saved my life. I was in such a dark place. I was angry when I finished it; angry that it didn't have an actionable answer to my suffering. But it got inside my brain at a fundamental level. Even now the concept of "this river ... of a thousand voices" helps me so often

Spent the morning reading up on our badass Goth Queen & mother of sci-fi, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. She suffered so much loss in her life and still worked to help those who needed it most. Including helping a trans friend get a new passport so he could marry his girl & start a new life in France

"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies - God damn it, you've got to be kind."

Instead of just screaming into the void, it's a good week to read/reread March - Congressman John Lewis' first hand account of the civil rights movement, Dr King, the reality of non-violent resistance (spoiler alert: it was violent AF for protesters), and the legacy of the movement.

Watching Martha Wells, T Kingfisher and Malka Older talking about needing to reread and watch our comfort books and shows during difficult times is very validating. They point out that cozy fiction doesn't have to just mean soothing stories, but authors that make you feel safe

This is today (1/19) at noon CT/1:00 ET! KJ Charles can't be there, so it'll be me, @older.bsky.social and @tkingfisher.com
This is part of why we (@tkingfisher.com @marthawells.com @kjcharleswriter.com & yours truly, with support from @loyaltybooks.bsky.social) decided to hold Comfort Reads 3: the Enragening this Sunday
(couldn't do it on a weekday, but you can watch the recording whenever you want)

Way back as a teen becoming aware of book bans, & frustrated with teachers limiting discussion of darker topics on texts, I marched into the school library to ask for a copy of A Clockwork Orange. They didn't carry it and wouldn't tell me why. Made me so mad.

Well this made for some lovely, cozy holiday reading. Inspired by The Goose Girl, it's another charming fairy tale from one of my favorite authors. Side note: I love that my most fave writers seem to all be bird nerds.

My kid is working the classroom book fair this week and mad as hell about it. I sat him down and explained the horror of retail to him. That'll probably help.

I always feel a little bit like a failure when I decide to stop reading a book. It's hard not to think I have to be a completionist even if I'm just not having a good time.

Watched PBS's Riding The Rails. Interviewed people who, as kids, hopped freight trains in search of better life & work during the Great Depression. Such a compassionate view of their experiences. Preserving those voices is so important. Not something I'd thought much about beyond The Grapes of Wrath
