It's interesting.. I just saw a video clip of Robert Redford in which he talked exactly about this very thing. He said that he thought most of life was sad, but that this very sadness makes it possible for us to experience moments of great joy. I feel that way myself just now.

I do think it's a huge waste. It's a historical building that should be left untouched, ballroom or no ballroom. No President should have the right to change artifacts or documents that are part of how we got here. Even the ones that make us ashamed, those should be preserved, too. So we can learn.
