More importantly, what has happened to the average yield over the period? Below shows the average spring barley yield from 2001-24 in England and Scotland. Lots of scatter but a consistent and significant trend in both UK regions. Scottish improvement is ~1t/ha over the period. Plant Breeding works

Defra posted UK #harvest24 production stats on Friday. Below is UK spring barley production in England & Scotland. Interesting Scottish production is stable around the 2Mt level but English fluctuates more widely between 3 and 5Mt. Problems sowing winter crops clearly affect English production.
