🧵I guess my point here is that I don't understand how you could read that book and not be worried. Regardless of whatever privilege you might have, those ideals represented in that book are alive and well in our society today.

🧵I also knew when reading it where some of the things that happened in Gilead came from. It's not hard to pinpoint all of those things if you know a good bit about history. Some of that I didn't know and have only recently learned.

🧵I read the book several years ago, I have not seen the television show. I was worried then when I read it about how real it could possibly be. I did not realize when I was reading it that it was written and published in 1985, which makes The Handmaid's Tale younger than me.

🧵While it is political in nature and it does use some exaggeration, Atwood did a lot of research so that Gilead would look and feel like real things that had happened and could possibly happen. There is no humor in the book. There isn't a lot of irony either. So it is not satire nor is it farce.
