You're right. In 10th grade, my teacher took our touring choral group to the grave of Benjamin Britten. She cried unabashedly for several minutes. This shocked me. It did give me a sense of permission to feel deeply.

Why? Pedagogical approaches change over time and always have. We're in a moment of integrating social-emotional learning into subject-matter teaching. There's no secret conspiracy in this.

As if dragging oneself through work to get a pension is a problem with the disabled person and not with the system for supporting people in retirement.

Sounds unreasonable to me. Welcome to ANY job working personally with people. Sometimes they are going to be sad, upset, etc. You respond human to human. A person's not suited to be a teacher if that isn't naturally in their kit of knacks.

I was thinking the same thing. My 6th grade year, the transition from arithmetic to algebra, consisted of reasoning games played sitting on the floor -- designed to be relaxing. I'm not a "math person" but remain comfortable with math to this day.

Not to mention the doctor doesn’t want you in the office spreading a viral infection to more vulnerable patients when the treatment is “drink a lot of water and get some extra sleep.”
