We’ve got work to do.
Hosted Philadelphia’s own Gloopy Goblin for Five Points Designer Toy festival this weekend, in exchange he made me this fantastic ceramic Toynbee tile! Very fun weekend despite torrential rain on Saturday, I got to meet a lot of cool artists and people in general

Instead of tailgating, I spent 2 hours driving 90 on the New Jersey turnpike to get ready for this game

This article is so good and hits a lot of points that drove me to start (and stop) doing software support.

Definitely give @edzitron.com a follow if you haven’t already

I found a family bible in a thrift store out in the sticks this past week and somehow two of the kids were born 4 months apart…?

#Raleigh Union Station #RGH has a observation deck that’s paradise for a #foamer

The weird dogleg from the waiting room to the platform is suboptimal, but they have a great view of the wye that serves passenger and freight traffic.

And lastly, help spread the word. Retweeting (or whatever) is great, sharing our volunteer day info and crowdfunding link is great, but please remember that it isn’t a substitute for actually doing something. I’m looking forward to meeting some of you on the 14th. #philadelphia #volunteer 🔔

In short, we have a lot of work to do. We can do some of it ourselves, some of it must be contracted to specialists. If you want to make a difference (and maybe you’re upset about how much money was lit on fire in the last month), please consider giving time or money to a local organization like us.

We’ll have gloves, trash bags, pickers and all the other equipment and materials needed, plus cookies (from a bakery started by a resident of Mt. Vernon Cemetery) and coffee. We just need YOU.

Our first step: cleaning up some trash.

Philly has a serious trash problem and it collects in poorly maintained brushy areas like our sidewalk. So if you think abandoned cemeteries are cool and you hate litter, please mark your calendars for our community clean-up on Dec 14.

I’ll save the whole story for another time, but it’s an underserved neighborhood and the cemetery as it stands makes things worse. We do a lot of work INSIDE the fence right now, but the conservatorship is coming to an end soon (good thing) so we want to start reaching out to the community at large.

One of the places that I really enjoy #volunteering in #philadelphia is Mt. Vernon Cemetery in the Strawberry Mansion/East Falls area. It’s a cemetery that’s been abandoned for decades and we’re trying to rehab it as a community green space, but it’s a dump at the moment.

Hey happy Sunday morning gang.

This is an older picture of a couple #ToynbeeTiles that used to be on Broad Street in #Philadephia, but they were lost when it was repaved a few few weeks ago. Damn shame but that’s how it goes.

Using today’s 8-hour train ride to catch up on some long-overdue organizing and labeling of my notes from the field

Another #volunteer group I’ve enjoyed working with lately is the Friends of Mount Vernon Cemetery in northwest #Philadelphia. We’re trying to remove invasive and other harmful plants from the abandoned #cemetery in #StrawberryMansion. It’s a very cool, strange, and oddly peaceful 23 acres

Another #ToynbeeTile post for you guys, this one is also in #Pittsburgh, since that’s where I did my most recent survey. I really like this old style with the text plus a little vingette, HoH doesn’t really do that anymore.

Anyone looking for #philly #volunteering opportunities should check out the Discovery Center at Fairmount Park. They’re growing mussels to study and eventually cultivate in the rivers to help clean the water. Very cool stuff and a very cool place in general.

This is a Toynbee tile made by an artist that uses the moniker “House of Hades.”

It’s an homage to the tiles made in the 80’s and 90’s in Philadelphia.
