I wrote Alice in the Land of Clovers and then stared at my ceiling for a year. #authorsky #booksky
I don't know whether I think this is sad or a touching commentary on the power of community in this rapidly changing world.

Me when android warns me that my battery life is low.

All I ever wanted was longer battery life, a charging port on both sides, and a laptop that I could see the screen of in direct sunlight.

The last piece of tech I remember being excited about was color e-ink screens.

Once my Roomba worked really hard so I gave her a sticker that says I hate mondays.

I can't stomach the thought of my baby boy going back to the shelter. He's already twelve and has arthritis, and he's small and cute so people naturally want to grab him without knowing. It would be a death sentence for him.

Take what you learned writing fanfiction and write something new.

Protect the community that made you, and have respect for the one you're moving into.

Long story short: I don't agree with the current trend of actively and aggressively advertising your work as being fanfiction but at the same time "not".

I don't think that anyone should risk hurting two communities in a way that would have long-term consequences just to get their bag.

I grew up in the bowels of the fanfiction community. I learned to write there and shared my passions with others, I never want to see that go away.

Which is why you don't see me blowing dust off my Batman fanfiction, and I'm well versed in how copyright law applies to any of my derivative works.

I say this all with the main work I'm known for being a historical romantasy retelling of Alice in wonderland.

I also put hard effort into examining every part of my manuscript to avoid copyrighted elements of Alice and don't rely on capitalizing on a popular subsection of an active fandom for buzz

Or, the strength of intellectual property is further diminished at a time when the tech industry is eager to retool and reclaim human creativity in the name of their pocket books.

Both suck.

If it ever comes to a legal head then there's only two outcomes and they both hurt writers.

Either IP holders are given control over derivative works, which JK Rowling has sued for successfully in the past and used to remove content according to standards set by her publisher.

I come from fanfiction stock, I grew up watching sites fight for fair use against Anne rice, JK Rowling, and others. It's always been a delicate house of cards, this recent trend in publishing brings it closer to falling over.

EXTREMELY CONTROVERSIAL OPINION: if your whole marketing plan relies on your book being fanfiction and the only real summaries you can give of your book are "if you like this fanfiction pairing then you'll love my book because I barely filed off the serial numbers at all"

You shouldn't sell it.

I know that Minnesota has already done a good job of making sure local taxes support the libraries that serve our communities, but I worry about the future more and more every day.

"this person criticized me online so I purposefully sought her out, forced my company on her, and then smiled at her in a way that could be described as being somewhat threatening"

Purposefully making other people uncomfortable isn't a flex

It's actually really really weird.

Praying that the state of the book market never gets so low I have to be so ungodly lame as to send readers bribes

Hey, um, onion?

This isn't really funny, just really weird.
