Carter was an Indiana-raised heartland white guy. The Madhouse is about as close to politics as his rhymes slanted; but every single poem in that collection still takes my breath away. I recognize so much in it. Maybe you wouldn't, but: Work, for the Night Is Coming.

Carter's hometown joint was The Madhouse:

...always
the Klan demanded hats removed
before the flag they carried,

always the boys at the Madhouse refused,
and began unscrewing the weighted ends
of their pool cues. People came to watch;
the police stood apart; the Klan

never got past the Madhouse.

God's miserable teeth, I wish Sen Sanders had the company of Paul Wellstone and Russ Feingold right now.

Reminds me of the concessions Obama gratuitously extended to Republicans during the passage of the ACA thru the House in 2009. Or the aristocratic benevolence Erich von Stroheim, as the POW camp commandant, accorded the officer de Boldieu in Renoir's The Grande Illusion. It's archaïc.

What are they going to find to take, once they've taken everything? Shouldn't be long before we found out, since everything is almost all gone. And to think there really was enough for everyone....
