Did Alonso do a bit of a go-slow to help? There was some suggestion on commentary that he might help out the former team. I don’t see how he could without having it looking sus.

It's 50% driven by the never-ending need for 'content' that extends and magnifies every little thing. The other 50% that Gen Z drivers and team members expect things to be fair (or try to make them fair) even in a sport as cut-throat as this.
