The Trials and Tribulations of being Baby Dungeon Master who somehow got a job being a paid DM.
Here's some rule changes I've made because I still struggle to balance combat. And to just encourage more fun at the table!

Why is a whiteboard so great when you already have a party tracking sheet?

1. Track initiative
2. Enemy HP tracking - gives the players visuals of how the combat is going
3. Changing up stats on the fly is easy
4. Easy to add a new monster.
5. Assign advantages and disadvantages

Conditions are a really interesting thing in DnD, because the use of them and especially which ones really depend on your table.

It's important to start slow, introduce one or two that are basic and easy to understand. And then move forward to others without overwhelming.

The idea that story-driven games aren’t replayable is so strange to me. I eventually bounce off every multiplayer game because I get bored, but I go back to story games again and again just like rewatching a favorite movie, or to experience something new

"board game publishers always lie about their play times"

some of you motherfuckers take a full minute to move a single meeple

IMO one of the biggest hurdles for games as an artistic medium is their over-reliance on combat as a core mechanic.

Saying this as a guy who enjoys a good combat system, but it's emotionally numbing and severely limits a game's narrative scope.

Look. If you play a game on easy...you're gaming. If you play it on hard, you're gaming. The only way that you're not gaming...is if you're actually not gaming👀

Fun fact: When you get paid to DM multiple DnD groups in a week is much easier when each campaign is COMPLETELY different. You won't mix them up.

Cliffhangers are a great way to end the first act of a campaign.

Cliffhangers that make your players realise they never questioned any actions, everything is imploding and now your players have the thousand yard stare due to the consequences of their actions are even better ☠️

The first magic item my players got was a pillow. The player rolled terribly so...

The pillow was cursed.

It was sentient and had a horrible personality.

The pillow believes it deserves a life of luxury and looks down on any who it believes are lesser.

So the player bought another pillow.

Balancing combat is hard, especially coming from #CallofCthulhuttrpg because you're supposed to avoid combat with those enemies.

I never know which monsters are supposed to be fodder and which are supposed to be a whole party vs it. I have had to nerf so many combat encounters just to not TPK 🙃

I already had 3 bookshelves.
I now have 4 because i needed space for all the #CoC and #DnD books, minis and extra shit I have. This is what happens when someone who loves lore and story shit becomes a #DM
