I think it’s available in lots of languages. That’d be an interesting experiment, I’m sure there’d be differences.

The thing is that I really do think there’s question about whether what we do with language, most of the time at least, is merely a predictive algorithm of sorts. Philosophy of mind/language is a mess. But there’s no doubt it’s at least a lot more sophisticated than what chatbots are doing today.

It is telling that our language produces patterns that convincingly imitate thought, and I think we are learning a lot about how we learn and think as we try to build better AI. At some point what we learn might cast doubt on whether we ourselves are “really” thinking—but we are so not there yet.

Personally I have no doubt that it is, in theory, possible to build a thinking machine because we know natural selection did just that. But as the technology stands today and in the near future, there is no attendant mind supervising the computations, and people need to know that.

‪Wow, I really wasn’t expecting such a response. Thank you all so much for your kind words. We’ve always gotten all our pets from shelters and if you’re looking for a pet I highly encourage you to do likewise! They may be a little more high-maintenance sometimes but they need loving homes!‬
