I have a theory about why, beyond just being people, much of US scientific leadership was caught so flat-footed and is displaying Neville Chamberlain-tier wet kleenex resolve in defense of our institutions and values.
I wish more prominent scientists would speak out about what is happening under Trump.

Yes, there is a real threat to one's livelihood of doing so. Being a scientist has been my lifelong dream, but there's honest work I can do outside of science, and I'd rather do that than serve the current regime.

like me puzzled about the anti-science sentiment in the US? here's a nice read arguing that there's no crisis of 'public' trust in science but rather a crisis of 'conservative' trust, which is rooted in their hostility toward government regulation of the marketplace.

Science is political. It wouldn't necessarily have to be partisan.

But when one party is opposed to science-based policy, scientists have a choice between saying "you're right, thoughts and prayers are probably as effective as reducing carbon emissions" or saying "fuck that."
