…just recently I rewatched a coupe of movies from 1991 (SLACKER and SINGLES) at the time I thought they were a fair chronicle of the way ppl my age lived. upon rewatching I was struck with how *squallidly* the characters lived. That was entirely within my adult lifetime

My father (b 1936, USA) was born into a farmhouse with no electricity or plumbing. his mother (b 1901, USA) was born in a house made of LITERAL DIRT. They were not “poor” by the standards of their days

I grew up with the most standard US English accent (Nebraska). Briefly moved to rural east TX in my early 20s and I was like a movie star whenever I went out for drinks. “Don’t he just talk like the TV people? I didn’t think people really talked like that. I could just listen to him talk all day”

My People are politically lilac white middle Americans, they barely acknowledge politics. there was a sharp & perceptible vibe shift 2 wks ago (ca. WH east wing demo) from “can you believe these assholes but whaddyagonnado” to “maybe some assholes need to meet a guillotine”

this is true and I have a related take that holding nonprofit cost recovery (ie overhead) to 10-15% is similarly debilitating. similar costs at for-profit businesses are typically 25-50%. for ex. nonprofits struggle for cash bc they can’t pay for effective marketing to grow the pie!

“rising wages + grocery inflation” beats “stagnant wages + stagnant prices” bc I can control spending much easier than I can control income, but this takes a little math so I see how ppl miss it
now we have “sinking wages + grocery inflation” which is a) not awesome and b) INCREDIBLY OBVIOUS

When I was a UO (90s) there was a Masai guy from Kenya, pre-med, 1st person from his village to go to college (or fly on a plane etc). The Emerald interviewed him:
“What do you think of Oregon so far?”
“It is so cold and dark here.”
This was, like, Sept. 7

given how he campaigned in 2017 he had a clear path to be Modi-popular. push a big infrastructure bill full of goodies for purple states & political allies + rebrand the ACA as “Trumpcare.” These were both on his instinctive people-pleasing radar. we’re lucky this didnt happen
