There was a study done on biker safety on normal streets, bike lanes, bike lanes with painting, and bike lanes with ballasts.
I need to find it, but the gist was that cars think the entire street is theirs unless forced out.

In London the last one I stayed at had a hole in the shower door. Not like with fogged glass, just an open port window sized hole.
