What a fun new place for #YouTube to shove shorts! Even if you LIKE them, who the absolute fuck watches shorts on desktop? Get them out of my face.

For those interested in behind the scenes #YouTube stuff, here you can see the bump (around day 20) that came from changing to a more legible thumbnail. CDs beat cassettes and clearly "you will own nothing" is a more popular slogan than McLuhan's old mantra. Video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vjso...

If you're still using #Google search for some reason, note that #DuckDuckGo now has a filter to hide AI-generated images (or at least attempt to). This is something Google could easily implement, but of course they WANT to serve you endless Gemini slop.

7. Autocracy Inc. by @anneapplebaum.bsky.social

Charts how how some of the world's autocratic nations rely on and support one another through finance and propaganda. Solid stuff but very short – every chapter of this could probably be a book twice the length of this one.

6. The Chaos Machine by @max-fisher.bsky.social

Many writers have chronicled the rise (and result) of social media but by rooting it solidly in psychology – both that of individuals and groups – Fisher manages to weave a clear narrative through the chaos. A stand-out work.

5. Internet for the People by @bentarnoff.com

A brief but solid intro to the evolution of the internet, with good ideas for the future. I was familiar with a lot of it but particularly enjoyed the early parts on internet infrastructure, which I know little about.

4. Mood Machine @lizpelly.bsky.social

I heard about this book via Pelly's popular "ghost artists" article in Harper's (harpers.org/archive/2025...) and the book itself exceeded my expectations. Comprehensive and succinct, it hits the nail on the head, bravo!

3. Data Grab

In Surveillance Capitalism, Zuboff named the enemy. Many writers have since expanded, updated or – as Data Grab does – introduced contrasting frameworks for understanding and fighting the same enemy. The core concept of data colonialism will certainly stick with me.

2. Talking to my daugther about the economy @yanisvaroufakis.bsky.social

Short and accessible intro to why everything is completely fucked. Its simplicity is a rebuke of those who use complexity to hide simple truths about greed and power. Would use to teach my own daughter if she wasn't a dog. 📚
