Seems sorta like ddos mitigation didn't mitigate most of the ddos? Unsure how to deal with this kinda thing going forward, there is a vercel bot management challenge type thing, but I *hate* serving captchas to real users, so idk.

Interesting choice in the schema for nooki.me ! collectively owned things are hard to model in atproto, even without any notions of shared privacy. I think a pattern that might be useful over time is rich multi-user access controls to a given pds.

The answer is record-replay: On the client side, we execute the callback once, passing in a special placeholder value. The parameter behaves like an RPC promise. However, the callback is required to be synchronous, so it cannot actually await this promise. The only thing it can do is use promise pipelining to make pipelined calls. These calls are intercepted by the implementation and recorded as instructions, which can then be sent to the server, where they can be replayed as needed.

My firehose subscriber occasionally just randomly starts returning this error and I have no idea why. Any thoughts?

Horned oak galls are formed under the direction of the gall-wasp, Callirhytis cornigera (Family Cynipidae). The vast majority of the insect and mite galls found on oaks cause little to no harm to the overall health of their host trees. However, these galls are an exception. Vascular tissue becomes disorganized within the gall structure which disrupts vascular flow. The portion of the stem beyond the gall is often starved of water and dies. This doesn't kill trees, but canopy dieback may be so severe you wish the tree would die.

By contrast, in 2007, it took weeks or months, money upfront, and a fair amount of learning to set up a decently functional, non-ugly WordPress site. And years to fine tune it. Now, 14 years later, it is somewhat easier (you no longer have to muck around doing unix-shell labor or keeping plugins painfully updated), but not by much. You still have to think hard about design, information architecture, typography (ugh!), distribution etc. Here’s a difficulty scale: 100: cgi-bin Perl e-zine circa 1999 85: earliest blogs, with manual RSS wrangling, circa 2002 70: WordPress, Google Reader/Feedburner era, circa 2007 60: Hosted mature WordPress, with theme frameworks, circal 2014 50: WordPress, including monetization plumbing circa 2020 40: Patreon-based multimedia creator stack setup, circa 2018 35: Static websites today, with minimal template editing 15: Substack 8: My guess of where the superconducting baseline will be once Twitter integrates Revue, Spaces etc. properly, circa 2022

The problem with this last point is that most platforms are defined by their medium: YouTube for video, Spotify for audio, Substack for text, etc. Sure, they are branching out — YouTube music, video podcasts on Spotify, and Substack supports both podcasts and video — but as a creator I would rather have my content where my subscribers prefer to consume it (i.e. if I were to launch video I would like it to be on YouTube). In other words, while platforms start with their medium and sometimes branch out, I as a creator want to start with a direct connection to my subscribers and enable them to access my content wherever it makes the most sense (this is the genesis of the Passport name: you ought to be able to carry a credential with you to other places that gives you special privileges). In short, if there is ever going to be a way for the big platforms to effectively work together to the benefit of individual creators, it will have to brokered by some sort of neutral entity that isn’t competitive with or beholden to those platforms; neutrality and independence is exactly what blockchains are uniquely suited to provide.

So google wave def died because of how silly wave/wavelet sounds right

Love this! And it feels v counter intuitive. Really interesting patterns become possible if you assume you only need to run them for "small" numbers of people.
Our self-host dream does involve handling the same 31M user write load as Bluesky's, but I think this is where the it's expensive critique gets wires crossed: Bluesky's read load is what's actually expensive. I have a billion links on a happy raspberry pi.
