I've finished Snake-Eater by T. Kingfisher, and I can't recommend it enough. This it a beautiful scary fairy-tale about a woman and her dog (a black lab!) and the friends and foes they made in the desert. Great people, great images, and it cheered me up in my dark time. this dog is mine.

Great Horned Owl. I saw it yesterday while walking the dog - it was sitting so proudly on that dried branch, and so well visible, that even with my phone I got a decent picture. I see owls occasionally flying, but it is usually too dark to make picture or even to be sure that it was really an owl.
