Here is the souvenir spoon she purchased with proceeds from the boxing match my grandfather won on board.
"Of course, Hugh put in a splendid exhibition & won the day. His opponent was the best boxer on board the Melita, among the crew." ~ Grace Clark in a letter home in September 1919. #warbride

It was on this day in April 1919 that my grandfather married while overseas with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. My grandparents only knew each other for a very short time, less than 3 months. They were married 48 years. #warbride #FWW

He married Nellie Brett in December 1917 at Kennington, Eng. Nellie came on the Carmania in December 1918, landing at Halifax. She was headed to her mother in law at Bedford, Virginia. Her husband returned home on the Caronia in May 1919. The couple lived in Roanoke in 1920s but divorced by 1931.

French War Bride Marie-Jeanne Mazeau married British born Canadian Expeditionary Force soldier Frederick J E Ball in Rouen, France in 1917 and came to Canada on the Adriatic in September 1919. The couple lived in Victoria. However, by 1925 Marie had remarried to John Diggle.

He returned to Canada with his wife on the Adriatic, leaving from Southampton to Halifax, 3-10 September 1919. Headed to Ridgetown, Ontario. Crossed the US Border a short time later. Lived in Michigan. His first wife died in April 1939. He remarried a few months later. #warbride #FWW

I am so thankful that grandmother recorded her thoughts on paper every day for 8 days while on her journey to Canada. The 68-page letter is an enduring legacy for my family, as well as the thousands of war brides who came to Canada after the First World War. #warbrides #FWW

In 1919, Canadian soldiers were waiting to be shipped back to Canada. Many, like my grandfather, met and married British women. Many young women also travelled to Canada to marry the soldier they met during the war. #warbrides #FWW

Lovely photo of a British War Bride and her Canadian Soldier. Thomas Arthur Lauder and his bride Marguerite B. Olive Winnall who married at Sussex in 1919. He returned to Canada with his war bride on the Corsican in August 1919, headed for Durham, Ontario. #warbride #FWW

He married Ada Carr on 17 Feb 1918 at St. Paul's, Old Ford, London, England. He returned to Canada on the ship Tunisian with his wife, landing at Saint John, NB on 10 Feb 1919. They were headed to Kitchener. The family settled in Acton, Ontario. Here is the citation for his MM.
