I'm reminded of technology in the game Endless Space which entails ensuring control of AI (true AI that is) by birthing them addicted to certain inputs that only their creators can provide. Arguably unethical, but something of a parallel to reinforcement

Like a lot of books that hit it big, its popularity has basically everything to do with right-place-right-time and nothing to do with the quality of its writing. Though I'll admit to only having read a few pages of this one.

The thing is, while you're not wrong, Valve has generally been pretty good. Even including recent events, they're one of the least objectionable major corporations in gaming. Yes, less monopoly is good on paper, but in practice their competitors would be so much worse. See ref: Epic.

Similar gameplay wise, no. I am currently playing expedition 33, though, and in my nearly three decades of gaming I dont think I've played a game more deserving of the 'artistic' descriptor. Especially not while still being fun.

It's also possible to hard force individuals as traitors with some mod packs, which can be abused to comical effect if everyone but that person is in on the joke :3

I mean doesnt sound like a huge issue, but you could always hide some of them and give them to her throughout the year instead? No reason gifts have to be restricted to a specific day after all
