if you really can't afford to get in trouble or lose the gig, you end up with a corproate self that takes the front-facing position inside you for X hours per day and only when you get home does the rest of you get to speak without the mute button on and your ability to process it all is delayed.

the worst part is, by nature of that performativity, if you're forced to fake happy and nice and sedulous and compliant for long enough you develop an awful double consciousness that grates against itself like a knee flexing without cartilage. it's like management mandated dissociation.
