Many late discovered, highly masked #autistics know there’s a particular type of rage that comes with having an invisible disability that wasn’t diagnosed until later in life. (/1)

Sometimes, despite all the planning, all the self-awareness,

life happens. Plans change. All the spoons get used.

& there’s nothing left for what you WANT to do.

When this happens, I find a helpful practice is to name whose here.

Welcome to the one who's pissed at missing out on fun plans (/1)

If you’re walking around the world with an invisible disability (which is the lived experience for many late discovered and highly masked #autistic people),

sometimes the kindest thing you can do for yourself is to simply pause and acknowledge that

“This is really hard."

If you find you need more help these days, that makes A LOT of sense.

All this uncertainty is hard for anyone to manage, and for #autistic ppl who naturally do better with consistency and routine, times like these can feel downright brutal to navigate.

But you don’t have to do this alone. (1/)

Being autistic can mean we’re used to being told that who we are and how we do things is not okay

But WE can be the ones to give our parts the care we didn’t receive

Some questions to ask our parts who feel dismissed: (/1)
March 31, 2025 at 10:51 PM
In turn, the one who protects it - the one who wants to caretake and control others - sees it doesn't have to work so hard, and has an easier time letting people be who they are.

And gradually, her burdened belief that she can’t expect care begins to dissolve, up and into the clouds

Paradoxically, in witnessing and holding in compassion the lack of care she has experienced, I provide the care she needs.
February 16, 2025 at 10:49 PM
As I hold these parts in compassion, I become a safe harbor for them to express their rage. I become one person for them to turn to who is not too complex, or too difficult, or too harsh.

I become someone who can help them heal their despair. (3/3)

For those of us who have been told time and again that who we are is not okay,

an antidote can be to join in spaces where we are told that actually, who we are is absolutely okay.

Healing from autistic burnout requires me

To treat myself like a serious person, with needs that must be taken seriously,

Even when others don't.

Healing requires me to become the authority of my own life. (1/2)

Autistic people benefit from consistency and predictability, so the ever changing rhythms of a woman's body can be one more overwhelming challenge to navigate in a world full of overwhelming challenges. (1/4)

Part of my recovery from autistic burnout has looked like

Making an intentional and gradual effort to remove myself from places of sensory distress

And experiencing (more deeply and for longer periods of time) places of sensory delight
