This thread is focused on contemporary romance, but a lot of the points hit home for why romantasy feels like such a feast or famine genre to me, why a ship either falls flat, or turns me feral for days.
the problem is that, well, to be honest, a lot of these books don't even seem interested in portraying the love interest as a fully-formed character. It gives big "women's fiction" vibes. She's on a journey, and he's there for a nominal HEA, but he doesn't really have much of an arc.

The way THE PHOENIX KEEPER by S.A. MacLean had a chokehold on me during vacation is nothing short of amazing. I had to PUT THE BOOK DOWN after reading a few chapters because I was trying to drink in the experience even more. New favorite author unlocked for sure. 🔥🏳️🌈
