“WHERE IS IT?” I check the corner of the image for a floor number, and I’m gone. I swing round the banister, nearly tripping. The thud of my sneakers on the floor reverberates up my leg. Drums rumble from the speakers, so loud my head swims. The floors spin beneath me, an Escher drawing. There can’t be as many levels as it seems. I ram through the door with my shoulder and tumble into a green hallway. The wallpaper’s peeling, and beneath the eerie glow of orange floodlights, it’s like the wall is melting. Crucifixes cover the walls—I want to think they’re on my side (I prayed, didn’t I?), but my heart’s in limbo, and that’s not where you want to be.

Extract from book that reads: “I see.” Kyril glanced between the two, his brows rising a fraction. “Retrieve those arrows. I want you all to take turns firing each of the different bows while the rest of us analyze your technique and offer feedback. Let’s see what we can learn from each other.” That was how they spent the next few hours. Veyl leveraged her status to have food and drinks brought out from the palace kitchens, so she might prolong what eventually transformed back into a friendly competition. Gannon finished a round, smirking at the well-placed grouping of arrows. On the ground, he was a little more consistent than his brother. He just didn’t have the knack Ahrin did for firing from the back of a fast-moving mount. “Well done, but your grip is too tight,” Kyril commented. “Ease up and relax into it a little. You’re trying to kill the target, not the bow.” “That was the best shot any of us made that round.” Gannon thrust the shortbow at him. “How about you, Ahninveth? I’d like to see how you do against us.” Kitria sighed. Ahrin leaned close to her as Gannon stepped back on the other side to watch. “My brother will never stop challenging him,” he said in a low voice, and Iyvalin nod-ded to support the assertion. “Because of what happened in Deepwater and to his tehnaak?” Kitria asked. Veyl took a few steps closer to listen and instantly regretted it. “Mostly, but also because of who he did in Thaelis.”
