US/Austrian dual citizen who grew up in Austria, now living in Houston. Just want to walk/bike with kids to nearby restaurants/parks without risking our lives.
After 16 years of living in Houston and driving to work, I decided a few weeks ago to bike to work. And I've been enjoying it so much that even a 28F morning didn't deter me. (and yes, that stylish balaclava was handed to me by my daughter because "it's too cold daddy" 🤪)

I think it was a success :)

South of Westheimer, yes mostly 11 ft with even some 10 ft. But north up to Allen Parkway it's mostly 12 ft. See attached some measurements.

Daylighting British style ... Probably this is also a lot more effective at alerting drivers of the upcoming crosswalk compared to a yellow sign on the side of the road. It's just paint, but paint can still make a positive difference.

oh and Quitman is even downsizing lanes from 17 feet to ***11ft***!!!!

Add-on, if you can stomach it: Here is the dashcam video that shows the 20 seconds leading up to the crash. The audio also shows the driving cop must have been distracted because she didn't react at all. The full dash and body cam videos can be found here. www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...

The woman HAD THE RIGHT OF WAY because she was in an unmarked crosswalk. The red markup shows where the sidewalk from Golden Forest Dr leads into the street to cross to the other side. This by TX Law is an unmarked crosswalk. (3/5)

Proof for the speeding: Taking the time stamp when the cop was getting onto the bridge at 21:52:34 to the time of the crash 21:52:56 that is 18 seconds for 1,466ft which comes out to 55 mph on a 35 mph street. (2/5)

It doesn't inspire confidence in HPD when taking 15 minutes to analyze the dashcam video of the Antoine crash reveals the facts
1) the officer was speeding at approx. 55mph in a 35mph street
2) the victim was in an unmarked crosswalk = had the right of way
3) the car was travelling southbound (1/5)

Compare that to the design specs for a speed cushion in the same design manual, where the 3.5in height differential is made over 36 inches. (1:10 slope).

That being said, I will still take those low-slope raised crosswalks over no-raise any time :)

That's because the design manuals in most US cities make sure that the slope is a lot more gradual. See here from Houston for a 35mph road. To meet the 1:25 slope requirement, the 4 inch height differential needs to be spread out over 100 inches (=8.3 feet).
