Perfectly understandable to be scared of flying. I promise, as a pilot, risk management is at the heart of everything we do and train for. Our ATC do a fantastic job of keeping traffic separated and safe as well, despite the overwhelming demands. Even with mtx issues, air travel is incredibly safe

This is not one of those cases. The crew needs to be proficient to operate at night but they were operating visually, which means they needed to see and avoid other traffic. Too much focus on the instruments - in this case - would take away from their ability to do so.
