Last night, Trump held phone calls with Thailand's Anutin Charnvirakul & Cambodia's Hun Manet and came up with this statement. "The roadside bomb that originally killed and wounded numerous Thai Soldiers was an accident," he claimed after the talks, calling for ceasefire.

The ceasefire agreement between #Cambodia and #Thailand is an important step towards peace. We thank Malaysia and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as #ASEAN Chair for mediating this process. Now, rapid implementation of the agreement and maintaining it permanently is key.

On day 5 of deadly border conflict, Cambodian PM Hun Manet and Acting Thai PM Phumtham Wechayachai are scheduled to attend a special summit today in Kuala Lumpur, facilitated by Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim as ASEAN chair and also participated by US and PRC representatives.

1/ US tariff omnishambles part 2: If the US hoped that tariffs could help create an anti-China bloc, they look to be having the opposite effect. The end result has been to create uncertainty amongst or closest allies and push many third countries closer to China.

Let’s be honest. Does anyone think that this president would honour Article Five? Presence of US military & nuclear sharing still has value to Europe, but its deterrent value is significantly reduced & falling. This is reckless, dangerous behaviour by the Trump administration.

The US allies and other hedging states in the Indo-Pacific (including Southeast Asia) may not find this glimpse of interaction comforting and promising. In Trump's first term, the Pentagon at least started with trusted hands like Jim Mattis (for a while) at helm.
