Searching for flow as an OSR DM, and finding there's more of it with tech assist.

DM = Dungeon Mother to nourish your inner child
'fuck off' he writes, and blocks.

A lot of innovation in OSR uses AI, but the older generation (eg Ennies) hate and exclude us. It would be nice to get some coverage! We are not OpenAI, we are just creative gamers.

Also, I'm gonna check out the 'Stewpot' that's mentioned.

Thought provoking post about the scaffolding. I can't agree with the 'every table is doing it right' argument because some tables feel constrained and want to change or develop their systems to better support their role play aspirations.

Really glad you're hammering this home. The main difference in old school was diversity of play styles - not by design but a result of guidebooks being ambiguous, ideas being abundant and groups being relatively isolated from each other.

The other aspect is using an AI to assist frees up the DM to do more or deeper focus on other areas. A huge part of the win comes from that, rather than from the AI doing anything particularly well. #DnD #ttrpg

Like @superdan.net i have been pleasantly surprised at times. But configuring the tools is not easy. I'd love to see more thoughtful discussion about that process.

Asking if an AI can DM is kind of like asking if a pen can write a novel. It can in the right hands with a lot of guidance. But there's no shortage of half arsed attempts.

I'd love to read more about your experience.

I can't see it, but I want to!

Watch 'Cube' the 1997 movie for inspiration on this one..!

I have been thinking a lot about fun dice mechanics, and ultimately conclude it's too dangerous a path to lay for anyone you like.

You can love the dice minigames but still be annoyed that they interrupt the main game every time you try to do something uncertain.

Interesting topic. If you search for "Game Farm photography", you'll find how many (most?) pre-AI 'big cat' photos are actually of captives and of questionable authenticity. www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHZo...

This is useful! Surprised you don't have any dungeon MLM options though!

Thanks for enabling Bluesky submission! PM'ed you with mine.

Gorgeous! So you had the object already 'created' algebraically, and Claude was able to 'translate' that into OpenSCAD?

100%. The history of #TTRPG s is filled with big threats of legal action, and AFAIK, zero actual court decisions. It might be that every rule system is like a recipe, and minimal IP protections apply. What we know is the owners have talked to lawyers and then... chosen to offer free licenses.

Nice. I have posted a lot about how AI can augment a DM, and have just recently found Claude can act as a pretty good DM for solo players given the right setup.

Don't plan and invest too much into the chase when the party might just choose an option that ends it in the first 10 seconds. Don't do what I did.
