USAID is an incredible brand and source of soft power. Killing it off would be a disaster for US foreign policy and for millions of the world’s poorest people.

The Census Scientific Advisory Committee, which advises the Census Bureau on research and methodology across various Census programs and activities, has been terminated as of 2/28/25.

This is another blow against federal data collection.

Such a travesty that the Demographic and Health Survey program was terminated this week.

I realize the Gates Foundation can't pick up all the pieces, but this one seems like a natural one for them to pick up given that the DHS is the go-to data source for many of their focus areas.
The Demographic and Health Surveys, a major effort supported by USAID and widely used across the world, are also not currently available.

Really enjoyed meeting with @vluck89.bsky.social and learning more about his book. One highlight was learning that some of his research was powered by @ipums.bsky.social !

The best Christmas present I received as kid was GeoSafari. I loved it so much. I would love to get my kids one but can't find something similar. Did anyone else play with this in the 90s? In addition to being fun, I swear it helped me get the best social studies grade in middle school.

Excited about the 2025 PAA conference. I had the opportunity to read through fantastic sets of extended abstracts and organize two sessions under the Mortality & Morbidity theme. Unfortunately there were many great papers I was not able to accept.

Some personal news: we’re moving to Seattle! We will both be starting new tenured positions at UW Seattle in the fall—I’ll be in Sociology and @jkerwin.bsky.social will be in Econ.

I am so excited to join a great group of demographers and sociologists at UW. Thankful for an amazing 10 years at UMN.

Do you have recommendations for a good organizer for a #PAA2025 flash session titled “Small area estimation of morbidity and mortality trends”?

Feel free to self nominate. You must not have organized in the past two years. Organizers also need to have an active PAA membership.
