Could have done with a painting or one of these large maps Vermeer placed in such a position, or a three-lobed window see-through to a city like a 15th century Flemish painting. But perhaps this was more realistic? Certainly less labour-intensive.

In 1926 it already had a "cadre en bois sculpté et doré" but impossible to know from that description if it was the same frame, the auction catalogue image shows it without the frame...
