I yell about reproductive justice, software engineering leadership, knitting, figure skating and costuming, trans rights, mandolins, Atlanta and Mississippi things, harps, and my kids and dog.
Small kids are actually a lot easier in some ways, bc they don’t take up as much room and have as many logistics. But by the time they’re 12, you’re essentially talking about food and housing for 4-5 adults. If you wouldn’t like having that many roommates, you’re not gonna like kids either.

I’m coming out of the other side of having 3 kids, with 19yos now in college just a 17yo at home. It’s been kind of jarring to realize what the absence of the lifestyle load looks like. The enormous grocery runs to feed 3 teens! The space required to house them and all their sports gear!

I was going to say majesty palm, but that’s basically the same thing.

And don’t forget statewide races in GA going 60% blue! Just absolutely getting wrecked!
November 5, 2025 at 4:46 AM
You have no idea how explicitly the white male candidate tried to make it about DEI.

Wrecked like a bad day at Talladega.

There’s an Alpharetta city council candidate whose signs and mailers all proclaimed him “the conservative choice” (it’s a nonpartisan race).

He is currently running at 13%.

It’s always gumbo night in my house on time change day for the same reason. Today was pouring down rain too — such a great day for a bowl of warm deliciousness!

Glycogen storage is a factor too. When we’re losing weight, we deplete glycogen stores, and the associated water is the “water weight” quickly lost in the early stage of a diet. Eat well, and the first thing your body does is fill up the glycogen tank, along with all that water.

Oh, totally. But HEDS is a rule-out variant, which you diagnose after you exclude cEDS and a couple other things. Which is why my daughter and I are now going to see a different, better, geneticist.
November 2, 2025 at 9:33 PM
Geneticist: EDS is really rare, no sense in doing genetic testing
Every orthopedist who’s directly touched my ligaments: have you considered that your joints seem to be held together with used bubblegum
November 2, 2025 at 7:18 PM
My hand orthopedist does this. Every time I go see him, he kind of shakes my fingers around and mutters about how none of that’s supposed to happen. He likes to call in any med students to demonstrate to them too.
November 2, 2025 at 7:14 PM
One day I really hope medicine be better at diagnosing and managing POTS, EDS, MCAS, and all the other related stuff. Sorry you are dealing with this!
November 1, 2025 at 8:03 PM
I haven’t pursued diagnosis mainly bc I don’t want to try meds now, but I might at some point. Will also see what the geneticist says after K’s big evaluation next month for whatever EDS/connective tissue thing we all have, since POTS is a co-morbidity.

Suspected for both me and K but haven’t bothered to do formal testing. Apple Watch shows 40+ heart rate jump on standing, and I commonly get high heart rate notices when standing still — nearly fainted at a work event last week. Compression socks, electrolytes, and eating lots of salt helps some.

Replace it with literally anything else and it’s obvious. “Frankly, it’s insulting to see generals with rotator cuff issues who can no longer do pull-ups”. Like, all these people are definitionally 50+! They all have arthritis and bad knees!

But somehow it’s the fat that’s the problem.

Live in Alpharetta and can confirm. But only if Johns Creek already bought it for $800.

They also increased the rate of RFEs and denials for transfers. I had an engineer get stuck out of the country for months because they denied a transfer request for nonsense reasons.

I’m from Jackson MS and have eaten barbecue in most of the state from Hattiesburg to the Delta. I think the white stuff is more of a northern Alabama thing anyway?

Funny how local food is even within a state!
September 20, 2025 at 12:06 PM
Where in Athens is this? Looks awesome to try next time we go see my daughter.
September 20, 2025 at 12:04 AM
No, the white BBQ is Alabama. Mississippi is Memphis style, at least in Jackson and the Delta.

We refer to my teenager as “the young sir” or “the young master” when he is being particularly entitled. But both the dogs are female, and they’re poodles, and we’re from the south. It’s just simple etiquette!
September 13, 2025 at 7:07 PM
We use “Ma’am!”, or “Miss Ma’am!” for high crimes.

There will always be another startup to join for an engineer with a few years of experience.

And IMO you are best positioned to get the maximum learning (and comp) value out of a startup if you’re not a raw new grad.

It takes a full day of driving to get from Florida to Florida.

Seriously, it takes 6-8 hours to drive through most states, outside of the small northeastern ones.
