Unifi gear is worth the money if you can afford it so I can't fault that as an option. I'm just cheap and enjoy tinkering! :)

Being a home automation geek can often feel like an exercise in self-flagellation but it's very satisfying when it all works! If you have PoE then I've heard good things about the EAP225-Outdoor. I'd flash it with OpenWRT so I can tweak all the WiFi settings but that might be a bridge too far!

Yes, it does seem that way. I ended up creating a dedicated WPA2 AP for my IoT devices because so many of them had issues with WPA3, but that's clearly not your issue. WiFi is a complex standard and there are loads of options that can cause strange errors like this.

This makes me think it's an issue with the device rather than your WiFi. Sadly a lot of IoT devices have extremely crappy wireless stacks. Do you know if your WiFi 4 network is using WPA2 or WPA3 for authentication?

It does but you can easily disable it all. They've said they'll support the older MV2 extension API for as long as possible so it's probably your best bet for now.

As others have mentioned Gardena use a proprietary cloud based system so if they turn the servers off it becomes a brick.
I ordered a Sonoff Zigbee valve over the weekend which can be controlled locally. If you don't have Home Assistant then you'd need a compatible hub.
