A Sheffield magic shop that has been turning tricks for 48 years is to close its doors for the final time. Russell Hall opened the Magick Lounge in 1977 on Howard Street before moving to his current shop on Broad Street in the 1980s. Over the past five decades has been visited by some of the best known magicians in the UK including Derren Brown, Dynamo, Paul Daniels, Tommy Cooper and Ken Dodd. Jeremy should really find out what a “safety bicycle” was and is, and why they were called that!
Journalists' love of human interest stories means that something gets deprioritized. That something is often statistics, which are much drier than anecdotes. My favourite example of this statistical illiteracy came from Jeremy Vine who, after a cycling accident, said: "This was the first penny farthing injury the hospital staff could remember seeing, which suggests they are normally extremely safe to ride." Thus giving us a perfect example of base rate neglect.

Got out for a walk in the Peak the other day. I only needed a cane, as the path was forgiving even with the frame and limited mobility, and I took plenty of breaks for photographs.

The straw hat jolly roger (from the One Piece anime) is the “symbol adopted by [Gen Z] protest movements worldwide” but the hat in this case is a traditional Malagasy hat, made from raffia or reeds. Every region has their own style, and I’m guessing this is from the highlands

none of the team's actual leadership could make it to the trade fair, so I was given the job of negotiating for us. This caused a little trepidation ahead of time, but I got the other analysts together and told them I had a strategy, and they had to do what I said. Trade Fair came and went, and it was the most pleasant experience imaginable for us; we got the best feedback from sales possible and were marked down as a particularly "commercial" and "co-operative" franchise. The strategy was this. Each team member had a pad of paper in front of them, on which I had written the letters "SYDN". Whenever things started getting tense, or when we were asked something unreasonable, or someone started to recriminate about past promises not kept, I nodded my head, and everyone was to remind themselves of the letters on the paper. Because this was the genius strategy I had outlined in the huddle beforehand. Say Yes, then Do Nothing. You have some wonderful stories of basically getting away with stuff at the studios. I'd learned one very simple trick: say yes. Simply say yes. Like Joseph E. Levine, on "The Producers," said, "The curly-haired guy—he's funny looking. Fire him." He wanted me to fire Gene Wilder. And I said, "Yes, he's gone. I'm firing him." I never did. But he forgot. After the screening of "Blazing Saddles," the head of Warner Bros. threw me into the manager's office, gave me a legal pad and a pencil, and gave me maybe twenty notes. He would have changed "Blazing Saddles" from a daring, funny, crazy picture to a stultified, dull, dusty old Western. He said, "No farting." I said, "It's out." That's probably the most famous scene in the movie, the campfire scene. I know. He said, "You can't punch a horse." I said, "You'll never see it again." I kept saying, "You're absolutely right. It's out!" Then, when he left, I crumpled up all his notes, and I tossed it in the wastepaper basket. And John Calley, who was running [production at] Warner Bros. at the time, said, "Good filing." That was the end of it. You say yes, and you never do it. That's great advice for life. It is. Don't fight them. Don't waste your time struggling with them and trying to make sense to them. They'll never understand.

Although I loved Mr. Million as much as I had when I was a boy, I was never able, after that conversation in which I learned the meaning of the familiar lettering on his side, quite to reestablish the old relationship. I was always conscious, as I am conscious now, that the personality I loved had perished years before I was born, and that I addressed an imitation of it, fundamentally mathematical in nature, responding as that personality might to the stimuli of human speech and action. I could never determine whether Mr. Million is really aware in that sense which would give him the right to say, as he always has, "I think" and "I feel." When I asked him about it he could only explain that he did not know the answer himself, that having no standard of comparison, he could not be positive whether his own mental processes represented true consciousness or not; and I, of course, could not know whether this answer represented the deepest meditation of a soul somehow alive in the dancing abstractions of the simulation or whether it was merely triggered, a phonographic response, by my question.

Really interesting analysis of actual substitution effects in a textbook “AI exposed” sector and it’s… good news all round?
In many jobs, tasks are diverse, stakes are high, and demand is elastic. When this is the case, we should expect software to initially lead to more human work, not less. The lesson from a decade of radiology models is neither optimism about increased output nor dread about replacement. Models can lift productivity, but their implementation depends on behavior, institutions and incentives. For now, the paradox has held: the better the machines, the busier radiologists have become.
