that’s a good point - definitely falls through the cracks sometimes, especially in stories that happen in residential neighborhoods. Generally I try and at least include the part of the city it happens in as a locator, but I’m def guilty of that at times too

My instinct is to go with the most well-known thing nearby. For instance, for that fire in Berkeley the other day, I gave the streets then said “a block from Berkeley City Hall”. Your point is a fair one though, and something worth thinking about when writing stories.

story, since I think plenty of people don’t know where Mason & Turk is. In our story this morning, I wrote something along the lines of “a shooting near Market Street” on first ref, then later said “near the Powell BART station”. (2/2)

ok I totally get the argument and don’t necessarily disagree, but to play devil’s advocate: Powell BART plaza is somewhere that most Bay Area residents can easily recognize as a locator. I think it’s important (especially in TV news, which is what I write) to have a recognizable landmark in the(1/2)
