Office worker and weekend hiker. Working on the Appalachian Trail 14 State Challenge, one day hike at a time. Big fan of house cats, National Public Radio, and books. NY-24 Politics and North Country Public Radio.
Delightful hiking on cloudy day in Troutville, Virginia on my way down to Tennessee. About 7.6 miles from the Route 11 trailhead out to the Fullhardt Knob shelter.

Last big trip of the year, visiting family in East Tennessee and getting in some AT hiking out to the Watauga Dam, part of the Tennessee Valley Authority. So grateful to be able to visit these places and spend some time walking in the woods.

Beautiful weather on the first hike of September on the AT in Duncannon, Pennsylvania. About 5.5 miles out and back from the Hawk Rock Overlook trailhead to the Cove Mountain Shelter. The hiking season is winding down, so I made sure to savor this autumn adventure.

Short weekend hike on the AT in Massachusetts, south of Great Barrington, starting off at the Sheffield Road trailhead. Mix of bog and quiet forest, a nice flat easy hike. This makes state #9 working towards the 14 State Challenge.

Great hiking on the AT/Long Trail in Vermont today, from the Route 9 trailhead out to Maple Hill and back. Hot, dry weather of late, but the trail was cool and muddy in places. The photo from the powerline corridor shows a view of Bennington in the distance.

On the AT this weekend, starting the Connecticut section, hiked about 8 miles from the NY Line out to Bull's Bridge and back. Great hike, I was afraid the rain and storms would make the trail too challenging, but I really enjoyed the mist and damp and dark forest.

Back in January, I had no idea that 2025 would be the year I hiked the Maryland section of the Appalachian Trail via day hiking. Feeling proud, grateful, and exhausted. More day hikes coming soon, be warned New England.

Sunday hike on the AT in Maryland from the Wolfsville Rd trailhead tp Ravens Rock Rd crossing. Muddy. Muggy. Buggy. Got an early start this morning to beat the heat, then enjoyed the AC in the car on the long drive home to Northern NY. A joyful weekend hike.

Sunday hike on the AT in Maryland from the Wolfsville Rd trailhead back south to Pogo Campsites. Rainy, muddy, and rocky trail made for many slips and close calls toward the end. Despite the weather, there were lots of hikers on the trail. So close to the PA state line!

Hiking the AT in Maryland this Memorial Day Weekend, from the US 40 Trailhead out past Annapolis Rock to the Pogo Campsites. I hit the trail early and managed to avoid the big crowds. Hiking is such a gift, and I have so much more trail ahead of me.

Beautiful weather this weekend for hiking the AT in Maryland, still moving northward towards the PA line, one day hike at a time. 10 miles out and back, from Old South Mountain Inn to US Route 40, just wonderful easy hiking compared to hiking up Lamb's Knoll last time.

April 2025 hike on the AT from Lambs Knoll to Old South Mountain Inn. Spring is in the air and the trees are blooming. A lovely day of hiking in 80 degree weather! About 40% of the way through Maryland, getting closer to the PA line every trip.

April 2025 hike on the AT from Gathland State Park to Lambs Knoll. A cold and muddy day on the trail this morning, continuing my day hikes to complete the entirety of the Maryland section this year. Loving the trail, Maryland is amazing.

March 2025 hike on the AT from the Weverton Cliffs trailhead to Gathland State Park. A warm, breezy, wonderful day on the trail. This is the second of a series of day hikes to complete the entirety of the Maryland section.

March 2025 hike on the AT from Harpers Ferry to the Weverton Cliffs trailhead. Gloomy, foggy, windy: a glorious hike after the relentless winter. This is the first of a series of day hikes to complete the entirety of the Maryland section.

In 1977, when I was a young editor of the Catholic Worker, Jim Forest shared with me a letter he received from Thomas Merton in 1966. I edited and published it in the CW under the title "Letter to a Young Activist." It speaks to our own moment better than anything I can think of.

Today is the anniversary of the death of Thomas Merton. Here are the words that changed my life, from his book "No Man is an Island." Maybe they'll change yours. Maybe they already have.

August 2023 hike on the Appalachian Trail out to Mount Minsi in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Pennsylvania. A steep, rocky hike on a 4.8 mile loop trail. Ran into some thru hikers at the summit. They kept going, I headed back to the trailhead. #hiking #pennsylvania #dayhike

October 2022 hike on the Appalachian Trail from the Compton Gap trailhead to the Fort Windham Rocks, in the Shenandoah National Park, Virginia. My very first steps on the AT, I remember not wanting to turn around and walk back to my van that was waiting at the trailhead. One of the best days ever.

On hiking trails, snow-covered mountainsides and even out on the water, these felines are proving that not all domestic cats are content to simply watch the world from a windowsill.
Adventure cats blaze new trails in Oregon’s great outdoors
Felines are evolving from neighborhood prowlers to adventure partners — on forest trails and even on the water.

Made an Appalachian Trail Starter Pack. Please let me know if there's any other accounts that post a lot of AT related stuff.

Thinking of making another one dedicated just to backpacking after this one
