I just don’t think they comprehend how inspiring NASA has been, and still is, for humanity. Kids are not going “I want to work for ESA when I grow up” they are saying “I want to work for NASA when I grow up”

In the UK we all take the same classes and sit the same exams, so it’s standardised for our subjects. We all navigate life at the same time as uni. We navigate life at the same time as our jobs too. Grades are the best standardisations. There is of course wiggle room for extenuating circumstances.

Undergrad is about learning core fundamentals of your subject, PhD is for learning to be a researcher in your subject. If you are already a publishing researcher in your subject, then a PhD program is not suited for you. Grades are the best and most fair metric we have.

It needs to be quality over quantity. I see many low quality papers pushed out my masters students/undergrads because it’s a “requirement”, it adds lots of noise to the literature too.
