Oh ffs. I quit. I'd come and yell at you when we inevitably lose our free speech but I won't be able to.

Yeah, cause banning alcohol, which does tremendous damage to our minds and bodies and society, and was banned for that reason, went swimmingly.

What did ppl do? They got it illegally. Putting their lives at much more danger than before.

Which is what's gonna happen here. Lives will be in danger.

Fact: Big Tech co's aren't gonna support something that hurts them. So why are they supporting repeal and reform of 230?

"One area that I hope Congress will take on is thoughtful reform of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act"

This is LITERALLY how it was before. People would delete comments on blog posts because they didn't want to be liable for the content.

Give me facts. Not your feelings.

230 Protects Users, Not Big Tech
Section 230 provides limited protection for all platforms, though the biggest beneficiaries are small platforms and users. Why else would some of the biggest platforms be willing to endorse a bill tha...

Your feelings don't matter.

Facts do.

We're literally telling you facts. We're telling you what things were like before. WE WERE THERE.

So, you're in effect, accusing us of lying. If 230 is repealed, I could sue Bluesky. They will not want to spend money on you. They will simply delete you.

Short answer - if you do ANYTHING to curate or manage posts, including deleting hate speech or spam, the site owners can now be sued for libel based on a post written by a user of the site.

You either get a site with spam and hate hell, or you get extreme moderation and limited user base.

HOWEVER, Meta is massive and can afford to fend off some lawsuits. So they get to continue to exist and affect the conversation. BlueSky (and your voice) don’t get to exist and don’t affect the conversation. Without 230, you are silenced.

Let me try this:

If section 230 is repealed, you don’t get to make that post. Because you just accused Patrick of spouting bullshit. Without 230 Bluesky would be liable if Patrick wants to sue them. Even if he loses, they have to pay lawyers. They can’t afford that. So they go out of business.

So... it's broadly counter-productive if what you want to do is "curtail the influence" of these big sites. Repealing Section 230 cuts everyone -else- out of the conversation and hands them all the power to control what people see.

It was gut wrenching and heartbreaking to learn that I’d been expending copious amounts of my very limited energy on people who didn’t see me as part of their community.

They were completing a group project.
Not building a community.

That doesn’t work though. Gotta have the ppl first.

Previous asks that they take care of themselves and take on less work were then weaponized as reasons why they couldn’t put energy into their members and needed to take some time (but not give up their positions) for themselves.

You cannot build a community that way.

We lost Reiner tonight, but through his art he became truly immortal. People will never stop asking Mandy to say that line because Reiner created something beautiful that will never die. It is a gift we'll never lose.

And we really, really need places where people can go do stupid shit in their cars. Bring back dirt tracks. :)

I’m good with top speed mechanical governors - but with shit the way it is, we want to be getting surveillance tech out of our cars. Speed bumps, narrow lanes, raised crosswalks, roundabouts, etc. Which ought to be easier than making sure every old car has new tech, and makes pedestrian life better.
