Someone asked me how significant documenting /different dialects/ of /the same language/ is during my phonology presentation last week. I believe in response to the fact Quiaviní Zapotec has received lots of attention.

One of my most frequent Spanish quirks is that I say ‘las una’ because obviously that’s how I would generalize time when all other time is plural. In any case, my mom analysis that as ‘la suna’ and always corrects me.

Sometimes my language consultant writes things for me in her (unwritten) variety. She writes words like /zɨt/ without the vowel (so, “zt” ) but tells me that there’s “something there.” Igual me dice que en Zapoteco no hay vocales. She can read and write in Spanish though!

I’ve reworked my tone analysis like three times now and NOW I think I have something that works. I’ll run it through my advisor tomorrow and see what he thinks. Me? I think it works nicely.

My language consultant really believes in me, she’s told her whole family I can speak Zapoteco now (I can only say ‘this food is delicious’)

it's so fun to me to position myself as Extremely Offline and Out of Touch (y'all know I'm so online)
but I did something similar in one of my classes last year and it was fantastic, highly recommend
