HAPPY NEW YEAR
2️⃣♥2️⃣ 6️⃣
Welcome the New Year with joy, embrace, kindness, generosity, compassion& commitment to sharing peace and happiness.
A new year doesn’t insist on perfection or radical change; it creates room,to pause, to ponder & to start anew with a little extra insight from past experiences.
January 1, 2026 at 1:13 PM
We’ve made it through another year, and now 2026 is calling and our path awaits.
As midnight draws near, anticipation blends with reflection.
The new year isn’t about perfection—it’s about giving yourself permission to start fresh.

At at number 1 (🥇), my personal favorite photo of the year (📸), it's this one of the first goal from Washington Spirit's semifinal win.

I love the spacing and Croix Bethune's pose is just perfectly placed and timed.

The original Bsky caption I put is right: "This photo says it all."

This captures happiness. This 📷 makes you want to smile. Photography by @roey.bsky.social
At number 2 (🥈) it's another one from Gotham's win.

Emily Sonnett is going full Sistine Chapel reaching toward Midge Purce, who is sticking her tongue out and doing a peace sign to the camera. Josefine Hasbo is giving Midge rabbit ears, Mandy Freeman's doing the same pose.

Just a ton happening.

A beautiful moment capture. 📷

Now for the podium finishers!

The bronze (🥉) is our last reminder of how compelling a Hal Hershfelt pic can be.

It's her pregame, in focus literally and figuratively in a closeup shot in the moments before kickoff. It's also the first time I got a good close-up shot of a player.

An amazing shot!📷

At number 4, we have the moment Rose Lavelle was announced as MVP of the NWSL Championship.

After she scored the only goal of the game, it was basically guaranteed she'd win, but her teammates still all shouted in joy at her, and it clearly overwhelmed Rose a bit.

LOVE this shot!📷

Into the top 5 now! Love the story behind this pic.

Deb Abiodun, despite needing to wear extra headgear after cutting her head open, came flying to mob opponent/Nigerian national team teammate Michelle Alozie.

Alozie was caught off guard and jokingly threatened her in this boxing pose.

A photo does tell a story.

This pic (number 6) is the only one on here taken on an iPhone, and it just makes me think how there's so much beyond rivalries that can bring fans together.

A San Diego Wave fan and an Angel City fan, in San Jose to watch Gotham play Washington.

Plus there are tortas. And who doesn't love tortas?

What an amazing capture. Check out the expression.

At number 7, it's another shot of the always expressive Washington Spirit midfielder Hal Hershfelt.

This one is from when the Spirit clinched their berth in the championship and she's celebrating with fans.

Almost looks like she's conducting the crowd.

Another amazing shot!📸

At number 8, I love this picture of Sam Coffey from the Portland Thorns' pregame huddle in the NWSL semifinal this year.

For me, the fact that she's framed by her teammates but is the only player in focus, and she has this determined look on her face as she speaks, it makes this pic for me.

Love this capture 📷

At number 9, it's this picture of Bay FC's Racheal Kundananji I took of her at this year's Skills Challenge.

She looks so happy, the lighting seems to hit her just right, and the NWSL kit with the Nike and Carmax logos kinda tells the story of just how much sponsorship is flowing into the league

Wow! Beautiful capture. Photography by @roey.bsky.social
At number 10, it's a late entry, from the Wizards game last night. Love how evenly framed this is, the way Bub Carrington's hair flies behind him, and how clear the urgency is of trying to stop a late-game shot from Ja Morant.

Life isn’t perfect, but it’s a gift. So I’ll breathe it in, let go of what I can’t control, and be grateful for this moment. Beautiful cloudy sky at #sandyhooknationalpark. #njspots

Wow! Some amazing photos and writing from @roey.bsky.social
This year, I really jumped into sports photography. 📸

I went from messing around with an iPhone to genuinely being able to use a DSLR and I'm really proud of my work.

I've decided to rank my top 10 favorite photos of the year here (the one below just missed the cut but is still a fun one!)

“As we stand at the threshold of a new year, let us choose to walk with a quieter step. May your eyes be opened to the beauty that hides in every corner of your world, and may you never doubt, even for a moment, that you are deeply and truly loved.”

Life is a collection of small breaths, and each one is a gift we can never hold twice. Today and in the coming week, I hope you find the space to slow down and listen to what your heart truly needs. #njspots

As we gather our thoughts in the days leading up to the end of 2025, we find ourselves at a sacred pause,a moment to reflect on what has passed & to anticipate what lies ahead. As we look ahead, I encourage you to carry forward only what holds soul and meaning—whatever lifts your heart.

“I'm good now with gentle joy. I don't need bright, noisy bursts that dazzle the breath out of me. They are beautiful but fleeting. Give me the steady kind that glows softly and offers warmth to any passersby who need it.” #njspots

Tonight marks the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. The Sun reaches its lowest arc in the sky, and darkness lingers longer than on any other night.

But this is not an ending — it’s a turning point. From tonight on, daylight slowly begins to return.
