The trouble with this either/or is that COVID-19 breaks it. We've had vaccines and still had virulent pathogens, because people had tantrums about mitigations that were informed by this.

Appliance manufacturers can't code their way out of a paper bag without throwing AI into the mix. Both my dryer and dishwasher have bugs that slightly (dishwasher) or moderately (dryer) limit their functionality. I'd expect "smart" appliances to randomly self-brick with little recourse for the owner
