Hi I’m Luke. I’m writing a book about #asexuality and I’ve been in charge of the r/asexuality subreddit for over 5 years. (One of the nice corners of that site I promise!)

Outside of that hobbies include:

- reading (non-fiction mostly)
- playing piano
- programming and Linux
- having a day job
Did you know? Individuals with a persistently low interest in sex have been observed many mammal species, including rats, gerbils, rabbits, sheep, goats, cows, and rhesus monkeys

While we shouldn't ascribe orientation to animals, such findings do debunk the idea #asexuality is 'unnatural'.

Did you know? Asexuality was mentioned in 1907 by US activist Carl Schlegel who said – “Let the same laws for all the intermediate stages of sexual life: the homosexuals, heterosexuals, bisexuals, asexuals, be legal as they are now in existence for the heterosexuals”

Studies almost always find that asexual men are much less common than asexual women (sometimes at a ratio of 10:1!). Do you think this is a real effect, or just men facing greater barriers to identifying as ace?

To me it seems like probably both.

I often hear from questioning people the most useful thing to see is a list of common ace experiences – so here is one such list. (Please use this with care. These experiences aren't universal and non-asexuals will relate to some of them.)

"I do not want to be thought of as 'unhealthy' or 'abnormal.' I am living in the way that is right for me."

– Quote from a self-described asexual in a Dear Abby letter from 1981.

Did you know? The colour green was originally chosen for the aromanticism flag since it's the opposite of red on a colour wheel. (And red is the colour most commonly associated with romantic love.)

Scan from an 1976 article in an gay magazine which discusses asexuality in some depth [1]. It's interesting to see how the Asexual Manifesto has echoed through time up to the present day. #asexualhistory

I've once been told that the word 'allosexual' it is problematic because it lumps LGBT people together with straight people. If you find yourself thinking this please remember that the word 'human' exists.

Had this – er, well-fed –squirrel eyeing up my spreadsheets today. Wonder if it thinks they’ll help it keep track of its acorns.

Some people argue that asexuals should be excluded from LGBT+ spaces because they're straight-passing. They aren't. But even if they were, are you seriously suggesting it's fine for them to be forced into the closet their whole life?

Being a virgin is in the same category as never having eaten an avocado.

The word 'monosexual' (originally meaning someone who only masturbates) was coined in 1869.

By the same man who coined the terms 'homosexual' and 'heterosexual'.

In the same year that he coined those terms.
Asexuality is not new.

In Contrary Sexuality (1895) Emma Trosse argued that since the existence of "those who posses no sexual desire whatsoever" is natural, it cannot be immoral [1]. In fact, Trosse counted herself among this category, which she called "third gender" or "asensual".

Since it’s #internationalmensday it’s a good a time as any to remind everyone that men can be asexual too!

A 2018 UK Government survey [1] found that asexuals are the only sexuality demographic whose healthcare gets worse more often than it gets better when they disclose their orientation to healthcare staff.

Looks like you need a minimum of 5 users in a starter pack, so I'm going to need at least three more local aro/ace groups to create one.
So, where are all the asexual and aromantic meetup groups at?

Did you know? In Magnus Hirschfeld's famous 1896 pamphlet "Sappho and Socrates" he argued for using scales from 1 to 10 to measure a person's attraction to the opposite sex and to the same sex separately. A very similar model would later be proposed in early #asexuality communities 100 years later.
