How’s fall going up there, Edmontonians? ;)

It’s that time of year - heat pump magic. Entire house (4 levels, 3000+ sq ft) being heated by 1.8 kW / 66% modulation (barely more than 1 space heater) at -6 C outside. Wish I had better insulation / bigger ducts and could use the heat pump down to its -23 C operational limit (-30 C on best models)

Is your hedge ready for Halloween?

Can an 8 year old and 4 year old ride their bikes from Lindsay Park to Shaganappi Park 4.5 km across downtown? (Yes with the exception of the 4 year old on the big hill) thanks to protected bike lanes and other infrastructure! #yycbike proud of 8 powering up Shaganappi Hill on his 8 speed city bike.

#yycbike Kidical Mass Halloween Edition! Chase’s first time in a group ride

Excellent overview of the pro/anti sides on this - the map of increased development caught my eye. For those that argue the blanket approach isn't targeted or transit-oriented enough - a large majority of the impacted neighbourhoods are Red and Blue Line adjacent (and future Green Line North).

#yycbike The new 34 Ave MUP is decent, wide with proper curb cuts, and connects from 17 St across to SE corner of 33 Ave/Crowchild (green section; ext to 14 St under way, yellow). If only we had a cycling coordinator because I bet we'll wait a decade for the red portion not to be narrow sidewalk. 1/

#yycbike and like that - poof - in under 30 days we’re up to Frog 44 / 16” wheel bike. (Frog 40 - 14” wheels and generic Dutch orange strider bikes available for sale to a new home, DM). Still can’t believe 8 went from this straight to 24” bikes but I think we’ll get a 20” this time.

#yycbike And we have liftoff! Last member of the family. No training wheels or camps needed just like big brother! (Also Frog bikes are awesome)

(also - we've now celebrated our 1 year "Kiaversary" and 16000 km on our EV9, and 0 need so far to use even the Tesla charger network - have only used L3 / fast chargers ~10x in that year) 3/

Trip started with 100% battery from home charger (~$10) + block heater plug L1 / L2 EV charger combination at Fort Sask hotel 2 nights + quick 23 kWh topup at Junction 42 for $15 in ~5 minutes. Typical Alberta scene in Ft Sask: Tesla plugged in to hotel charger next to "F Carney" truck. 2/

Flo Ultra is amazing. 2x 320 kW (shared, trailer friendly but not pull through) stalls at Junction 42 truck stop just south of Red Deer / gasoline alley. Charged at 215 kW in 5 min adding 1/4 back, more than I needed to get home. Display shows available power and what vehicle is requesting.

Calgary’s inaugural Kidical Mass ride! Thx to @whoalansi.bsky.social for organizing. #yycbike

#yycbike Urgh, 2 km from home after another reservoir circuit. Locked it to parking sign, walked home, drove back with tools - dropped wheel, new tube, got wheel back on (don’t recommend roadside for heavy bike but doable) and home. No idea what caused puncture next to valve stem - rim tape is ok

#yycbike A half century day doing 2 near full reservoir loops dropping off and picking up 8 from sailing camp is not the worst way to bookend a summer work day

Exhibit B: how it was *not done* where 26 and 29 Sts cross 17 Ave SW but should have been. Those invisible unsigned ramps with no indication of who has ROW? That’s how the City wants bikes to cross.

#yycbike Exhibit A - a key part of the paint only 20 St SW wheeling lane is fixed (except for RTOR being permitted) as it crosses 33 Ave

We’re home! First big non-Tesla electric road trip to Okanagan, Van Island and back to YYC. 0 issues with L3/fast charging (only needed it 3 times), and spent barely over $100 overall in charging cost. EV9 averaged very near 500 km range at highway speeds over multiple mountain passes. 1/

I will never be as cool as @brettbergie.bsky.social - but I can try! Cruising Victoria on a @bikebikeyyc.bsky.social bought Brommie. I am a (temporary) Foldie! (Also in the peloton a BikeBike UA and a rental UA from Bishop’s Cycles #yycbike

Ok white Tesla that I suspect was on “self-driving” (can’t see from video by driver wasn’t engaged / fazed by the close call at all - car rolled a right turn on red, I had clear green - failed to see me through other traffic turning across intersection). Even in my big car - I hate right turn on red

In past episodes of “Will it fit in an EV9?” we saw it transport an 8’6” Urban Arrow Family cargo bike with 1 seat up. Today, we try fitting an entire single race car bed with 4 seats up - does it fit? Yes!
