I do art shows with pretty niche work that doesn’t really make much money; only a small number of people connect with it. But honestly, I don’t make art for mass appeal or the money (although money is required to keep going). I do it because I love the conversations, the energy, the connection.

I love it when a painting looks different when viewed at various angles and changes with the light. I make art because I am curious and I love the experience of seeing it take shape. My work often becomes something surprising when it’s finished.

Before 2020, I spent my evenings and Sunday mornings painting from life at local figure drawing groups—spaces that felt like home, full of quiet focus and shared curiosity. When the pandemic hit, those gatherings disappeared overnight. Like so many others, I went into lockdown unsure of when, or if, we’d return to those rhythms. But something unexpected happened. Out of that isolation, a beautiful shift took place: online figure drawing communities began to form. Artists and models from around the world came together, needing connection, needing to create. I found myself drawing with people in different time zones, different languages, all showing up for the same reason—to keep making art through uncertainty. This image shows a figurative watercolor painting beside the cover of the Art of Josh watercolor book. This book is a record of that time. It holds the memory of going inward, reaching outward, and slowly returning to the physical spaces that first nurtured my work. It marks five years of figurative painting, spanning pre- and post-pandemic life, and is organized into five themes that reflect the emotional terrain of that journey: Moments, Embodiment, Dreamscapes, Echoes, and Expressions.

I love it when people can hold a large body of my work in their hands. I think my hardcover art book is the second best thing to owning original paintings. Plus, a book is a nice alternative for those who love nude art but are not ready to display it on their walls.

Bianca and Guadalupe communicated energy through movement and stillness during a recent life drawing session. They internalized Egon Schiele’s works and expressed inspiration from it with spontaneous movement, responding to each other and pausing together, their bodies living art.
