This is the kind of thing that gets me about things like croc-scuted spinosaurus recons and even the "scaly dinosaurs are scarier than feathered ones" crowd--most dinosaurs would look smooth at the scales (ha) we usually depict them at. Dinosaurs were smooth as hell!

At the very least, the actual authors of the paper aren't arguing for that and point out that the structures are not at all feather-like. Based on the title alone I was concerned too lol, but no, birds are still dinosaurs

I'm not a scientist or anything, but yeah, i believe most birds initially propel themselves with their legs to get off the ground :>
