Phil Ochs was born on this day in 1940 in El Paso, Texas. Ochs was a songwriter and “topical singer” who was often called a “singing journalist” for his ability to turn current events into poignant folk songs. He played a central role in the civil rights and anti-war movements. /1

Is MAID accessed due to social isolation, or as a substitute for social supports? The evidence says no.

The more I read Walter Benjamin the more I think he is a very tricky stylist. His great capability seemed to be writing poetry that at first appearance looks like normal critical theory 🤔

Far and away the smartest review f A Complete Unknown, but also, a brilliant telling of Dylan's evolution from a young aspiring folk singer & cultural sponge, the avant garde education he received from Suze Rotolo, his repurposing of Brechtian bitterness towards break-ups songs,

'Even at their most nonsensical or at least non-narrative, the songs articulate a pronounced obsessional despair about the possibility of intimacy or even physical proximity.'

I hate that it's gotten this far, but if countries want to counter a US-imposed trade war, they should make Elon Musk's companies a focus of their retaliation.
Those business interests have effectively merged with the US executive branch, and decision-makers value them more than the American people.

We remember.
35 years ago, 14 students were killed & many injured because they were women. Their lives were cut short by a man who blamed feminists for his failings.
As we remember the victims at École Polytechnique, reflect too on the ongoing effects of gender-based violence and femicide.

35 years ago today, 14 women were killed in a Montreal engineering school because they were women. The misogyny that led to this tragedy is still very present today and even making a comeback in modern masculinist discourses. Never forget.

I was 10 years old on December 6, 1989 and already a feminist. I have attended countless vigils and cried so many tears for the 14 women lost on that day, and the far-to-many thereafter. It’s 2024, and femicide is still a national epidemic.
