Saab is partnering with Bombardier with the updated sales pitch, so they'd likely be built in Quebec now... It was IMP in the original offer which is why we were in the mix.

They kind of are. But on the other side of it. ...And the scope and proposed road work was scaled back pretty dramatically. engagehalifax.ca/west-end-mall

The original source was a light novel. The manga and movie were both based on that.

I mean, yeah, kinda. Unironically. Cajuns being the descendants of Acadians and all.

It's also funny how history seems to have stopped during or slightly after the Victorian era for most of them. Are we not allowed to give contemporary architecture the chance to become part of our history?

The route doesn't look particularly population dense, and repurposes a line built for industrial use. How many people will this actually serve? Are there any serious plans for ToD, and will there be enough growth to make it worthwhile? So frustrating.

This is a solution in search of a problem, and potentially makes tarnishes the idea of investment in higher order transit if it (likely) flops. Blah. The article makes it sound like they spent most of the time looking at the infrastructure and not the actual use case beyond hypothetical CBU students

You're misinterpreting what was said. Climate change happens and has always happened. It's just that it's normally over tens of thousands of years and nature has time to adapt. It's the rapid, human driven, artificially induced change that's going to kill everything, which is what the post states.

Submitted a map correction via Google Maps. We'll see if they do anything.

I don't entirely agree with that line of thinking, though. People use them when they're in a hurry, so aren't going to be window shopping or adding to the vibrancy of a street. They're also good for inclement weather, people with mobility issues, avoiding cars etc.

There was some consideration of having the new convention centre connected, but I also dimly recall that the current thinking is that tunnel and pedway networks are bad for street level activity, so are generally discouraged (may be misremembering).

Probably worth mentioning for the sake of clarity that Canadian and US unemployment rates are calculated differently. Some past adjusted numbers for comparison: www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/daily-quo...

And an explanation of how the methodologies differ: www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/75-00...

Is it just me or is his speaking even more slurred than usual? Maybe it's just the non-stop, rapid run-on sentences making it more apparent.

...and maybe something around passenger priority would do wonders to improve the situation. I think there's some additional funding for VIA in the budget, but it's still core oriented. I'd rather see it spent on everything but given that Alto and GO expansion mean that ON is already taken care of.
November 4, 2025 at 10:22 PM
We can do both. And the core railway network is still there, it's just been left to rot under private ownership. I'm guessing nationalizing the infrastructure would be too much of a headache, but introducing regulations to improve the minimum standards and maintenance...

Grew up in very rural parts of Digby county and Annapolis county. Was always the weirdest, nerdiest kid in my grade, and everything I was interested in seemed out of reach, so it was a pretty isolated existence. Always felt more at home in the city.

The fact is that single stair construction is done safely elsewhere. It can be the same here as long as it's not done in isolation. There's no reason we can't.
November 3, 2025 at 8:48 PM
All of these things are worth considering, of course. I do take issue with the dismissiveness that other places where it does work are just literally and figuratively 'built different'. Allowing for single stair construction can & should come with other regulatory changes to address foreseen issues.

Traditional news getting displaced by unreliable digital media. Algorithmatized social media gaining widespread traction. Media concentration creating an illusion of opinion. Foreign (Putin et al) and domestic powers with an axe to grind and all these new tools to use. All started around then.

The Liberals may be fine with playing chicken on the budget as long as the polling favours them, and Carney has a huge lead over Poilievre in leader polling. Either one of the other parties caves, or they can play it off as the CPC's fault for forcing another election so soon.

The best part is that it can be a virtuous cycle. More trains -> fewer cars -> safer to bike.

Does the use of Wollastonite capture more CO₂ emissions than the mining/production process creates?
How are we monitoring the actual efficacy of this technique in this application?
How does the cost and efficacy compare to other methods such as reforestation? (quick search says not even close)
