For nearly two years, Ōishi and the other rōnin secretly plot their revenge. They live in hiding to trick Kira into thinking they have given up their vendetta. Finally, on a snowy night, they attack Kira's mansion, kill him, and bring his severed head to their master's grave.

The story begins with a feudal lord named Asano Naganori who is forced to commit seppuku (ritual suicide) after he attacks and injures a corrupt official, Kira Yoshinaka, inside Edo Castle. Asano's loyal samurai become rōnin, led by their chief retainer, Ōishi Yoshio.

Unfortunately, the Exodus Black never reached its destination. The ship encountered a catastrophic event, leading to a crash landing on Nessus, a planetoid in our solar system. The exact cause of the crash is debated, but the Vex, a time-traveling race, are heavily implicated.
