Doing my annual rewatch of 'Fall of the Roman Empire.' I like this movie more some years than others; this is proving to be one of the others.
I will say that James Mason and Alec Guinness are very funny in the Provinces on Parade scene (in a film that otherwise takes itself very seriously).

🎬 Recent viewing. One of the 1940s toponym-as-title films (cf. 'Casablanca,' 'Calcutta'). This one has Veronica Lake, a river steamer, a suitcase full of cash, an enigmatic half-caste police detective, sultry atmosphere, a happy ending that leaves you with the taste of ashes in your mouth. 10/10

Very atmospheric, though script not quite up to the level of the star-studded cast. James Mason (Watson) and Donald Sutherland (it's a long story) probably the standouts.
